Batman's Tactics To Be Used By The CIA

Should Batman's tactics be used by the CIA?

While the Central Intelligence Agency is not usually
associated with comic book characters such as Batman,
it might be time for the intelligence organization to
consider some of his methods.

Batman has refined the practice of using his skills to instill
a cloud of fear into the hearts of criminals.

As the sole vigilante protecting Gotham City, he understands the
need for his image to be ingrained in the minds of criminals.

Because there is no realistic possibility of an individual to combat
thousands of criminals, Batman needs to resort to what can be
called a strong dosage of propaganda.

The CIA can benefit from a propaganda campaign based
on instilling fear into the hearts of Al Qaeda members.

Instead of apologizing for the use of quasi torture methods,
the Central Intelligence Agency should use third parties to
disseminate stories into the media regarding the suffering experienced
by terrorists.

Think about the second guessing that would take place by terrorists
that heard horrific stories regarding the CIA treatment of terrorists.

Even an individual who finds glory through death is afraid of living
in pain.

Batman has honed this theory as he pursues criminals.

Batman's adversaries such as the Joker and the Penguin know
that Batman doesn't kill, but are still afraid of the violence he can
inflict on them.

Batman Comic Books: Menace To Children's Mental Health?

Batman comic books may well be a menace to
children.

Marketed to adults, teenagers, and children,
Batman comic books have an audience that
cuts across age barriers.

But just because Batman comic books are being
read by a cross demographic of different age groups,
does not mean that the comic books are appropriate
for all of them.

While the substance being marketed is different,
who can forget the admission by cigarette executives
that they were specifically marketing their cigarettes
to children.

I am not suggesting that Batman comic books have the same
corrosive physical effects on children as cigarettes do,
but they both potentially have inherent threats to the
mental well being of children.

While a child might start by reading a Batman comic book that is
appropriate to his age, that comic book might act as a
benign gateway drug, and lead him towards harsher Batman
comic books.

Comic books such as The Killing Joke, The Dark Night Returns,
and Batman Year One, deal with harsh adult topics such
as murder, torture, rape, and disfigurement.

Topics that even the most liberal parent would agree not to be
suitable for young children.

In order to protect children, there should be a clear delineation
along age appropriateness levels in the comic book
field.

A system similar to the one used by movie theaters should
be applied to the comic book industry.

The same enforcement approach that makes it illegal for
a convenience store to sell tobacco to minors should be
applied to the sale of comic books.

Do Batman Comic Books Face Extinction?

Batman comic books have long been the staple
of die hard Batman fans.

But as the newspaper industry discovered that
it could not retain its former readers, will comic book
publishers also come to the same realization?

From a business point, Batman comic books are
still a viable and profitable source of revenue for
DC Comics, the publisher of Batman comic books.

But from a practical point, it must be becoming increasingly
apparent to the executive suite that its readers are
flocking online.

If Batman comic book readers are already surfing online,
why not offer them their comic book entertainment
online as well?

Revenue can be increased by offering a subscription based
model, where for a monthly or annual fee, a Batman fan could
keep up with the latest issue.

As an incentive, DC Comics could also offer access to past issues
as part of the membership plan.

Instead of making money only on the latest issues, older issues
of Batman comic books could be offered for instant download,
similarly to the Apple iTunes formula.

For .99 a comic, Batman comic book fans could download any issue
in an eBook format.

Think about how much more revenue could be derived through impulse
purchases.

Revenue from advertising and affiliate relationships could also be increased
by inserting dynamic ads on the online pages of the Batman comic books.

Will Batman Comic Book Fans Abandon The Dark Night?

Batman comic books have traditionally
attracted a more mature audience than some
of the other comic book series published by
Marvel or DC.

The Batman comic book fan base enjoyed the
darker and grittier story lines that could be
found inside.

Comic book art that truly
brought the reader a glimpse into what petty criminals must have felt when
they encountered Batman has long kept fans coming back for more.

Who can forget the war like portrayal of the Dark Night by
the acclaimed artist and writer Frank Miller in Batman Year One.

Or the Neal Adams Batman version that severed the character
to any connection to more happier days.

The latest Batman movie has done justice to the
image that Batman comic book fans expect.

But the lingering question is, as Batman becomes further
commercialized, will the Batman comic book series
enjoy its artistic independence, or will it succumb to
the commercialization demands of Hollywood?

How Would Batman Handle Al Qaeda?

Batman comic books have always offered
a more edgier and darker fantasy world than
the stories presented by the comic book series
of characters such as Superman, X Men, and
the Hulk.

It seems that the essence of Batman's character
lends itself to grimmer stories, since the character's
origin is based on tragedy involving the murder of a
young boy's parents.

Since various Batman comic books already deal with
adult topics, and approach these topics with a serious lifelike
story telling method, I wondered how Batman would deal with
today's most pressing issue.

How would the Dark Night from Batman comic books deal
with terrorism?

Would he tackle it at its root?

Or would he limit its intervention to sleeper cells involved
with domestic crime?

In addition to Batman's tactical approach, it would be interesting to
see how he deals with the moral issues that would arise.

Would be break his rule and apply lethal force when needed?

Perhaps not, since many of Batman's enemies, including the Joker,
already have tempted Batman to abandon his objection to lethal means.

But what if a terrorist had plans to commit mass murder, and the only
way to obtain that information was through torture.

Would Batman weigh the value of saving millions of life, versus the
inherently sadistic nature of torture?

Even though Batman comic books are meant to offer an escape from reality,
we can learn concrete lessons when applying a theoretical situation to our
present day challenges.

Has Batman Been Outlawed in China?

Batman has been declared a criminal in China,
subject to arrest upon sighting.

According to the New York Times, Warner Brothers has opted not
to release The Dark Night movie in Chinese movie theaters.

Concerns include scenes shot in Hong Kong that display its local crime scene,
to the featuring of Edison Chen, a well known Chinese singer that appeared this
year in compromising pictures.

While the movie could have undergone a censoring process by Chinese authorities,
it seems that director Christopher Nolan values the integrity of his movie, and would
prefer to limit its distribution than see his movie dissected.

Perhaps this is a throwback to the time when some of the Hollywood elite resisted the
meddling censorship of the anti communist McCarthyism movement.

It will be interesting to see if movie goers in China demand more tolerance from Chinese authorities
in order to be able enjoy a wider selection of movies.

What looks like a creative decision by the producers of the latest Batman movie might have
long term political ramifications in China.

Is Heath Ledger Casting A Dark Shadow On Batman?

With news hitting the street that the 3rd movie in the Batman franchise is entering pre production, there is allot of controversy brewing behind the scenes.

Eddie Murphy was purportedly offered the role as the Riddler, one of Batman’s most endearing foes.

Even though Eddie Murphy’s career could have benefitted from his appearance in what will likely be a major Hollywood blockbuster, the once popular actor declined the role.

While the reasoning behind the once famous actor’s decision is unknown, speculation has it that it is related to the apparent suicide by Heath Ledger, who played the emotionally tragic role of the Joker in the Dark Night.

The two main villains to appear in the next installment of the Batman franchise are Riddler and the Penguin, and possibly the ambiguous Catwoman.

Catwoman, a professional thief in the Batman comic book series, has often crossed the line from ally to foe, and has had an on and off romantic involvement with Batman.

Once is for certain, Batman comic books should experience a resurgence in interest with the release of the 3rd Batman movie.

Similarly to the Star Wars effect on pop culture, as more Batman movies are released, the popularity of all Batman related merchandise should increase as well.
