Has Batman Been Outlawed in China?

Batman has been declared a criminal in China,
subject to arrest upon sighting.

According to the New York Times, Warner Brothers has opted not
to release The Dark Night movie in Chinese movie theaters.

Concerns include scenes shot in Hong Kong that display its local crime scene,
to the featuring of Edison Chen, a well known Chinese singer that appeared this
year in compromising pictures.

While the movie could have undergone a censoring process by Chinese authorities,
it seems that director Christopher Nolan values the integrity of his movie, and would
prefer to limit its distribution than see his movie dissected.

Perhaps this is a throwback to the time when some of the Hollywood elite resisted the
meddling censorship of the anti communist McCarthyism movement.

It will be interesting to see if movie goers in China demand more tolerance from Chinese authorities
in order to be able enjoy a wider selection of movies.

What looks like a creative decision by the producers of the latest Batman movie might have
long term political ramifications in China.
